Milo Thatch Audition Empty

1st year

So this was it. The ship that would take him to his new home.  He was going to the school that he had been waiting to go to since he was little! He believed that younger would be the best word choice since he was eleven years old to be exact. He leaned over the railing and watched the water move against the boat. He pushed his glasses up and looked away quickly with a slightly green face. “J-Just had to be a boat,” He whimpered slightly under his breath.

Well he rather stayed on this boat than with his family. To say the least, Milo wasn’t fond of his family at all except for his younger cousin, Taran Lancaster. The Thatches were a half-blood family but they were still very well known in the Vulpe and Gerwulf houses. The Thatch family was full of perfectionists and was intent on molding any member in the family into what they perceived as perfect. Unfortunately for them, he had been the black sheep and stayed that way. He grinned slightly at this then scowled.

But unfortunately for him, his father and mother took all of his books and hid them in the house. They hated the fact that he was an introvert even though they were snooty extroverts. But what pissed them off the most to hide all of his books, was the fact that he told them that he wanted to be in Owlorn. To make it short, his parents went off on him saying that the house was nothing and took his wonderful books away. He did use a spell to bring his books back to him, but after a while they had figured out a counter spell. But there was one thing that they couldn't take from him though.

That was Taran. The Lancaster family was alright with Milo since he hid his magic well and promised not to show Taran magic. He chuckled softly as he leaned his forehead onto the railing. He broke that promise so many times though. His eyes saddened slightly at the fact that he wouldn't see Taran till vacation and summer. As he drifted off into his mind, a mermaid must have seen that the young boy was giving her no attention. She smirked slightly at him then used her tail to splash water up at the boy. He squeaked in surprise and shook his wet head of the water.

“Y-You didn't have to soak me!” He exclaimed to the mermaid who just laughed at him and swam away to the front of the boat. He stuck his tongue out at her and took of his glasses to clean the water off them. “Mom did tell me that they were mischievous…maybe I should’ve believed her that time.” After cleaning his glasses, he puts them back on and immediately goes red when he sees a blonde boy laughing at him. He blinked slightly in surprise when the boy gave him a cute grin then looked away in embarrassment with hot cheeks. He side glanced at the boy and gave him a small smile. This trip to his dream school had gotten better.

As Milo stood in the humongous group of first years, he watched students get sorted to the different houses and sit down at their house table. He was memorized by the animals flying out of the crest then back into the student standing there. It looked beautiful. His eyes slightly widened when he saw the owl swoop down and into the young female student. “Owlorn!”

He breathed out slowly to calm his excitement and smiled eagerly. That was the house he wanted to be in. No doubt about it. He smiled more at the fact that he was going against his parents’ wishes. He was his own person, he was going to like who he liked and be in the house that fitted him just right. His eyes glanced over to the blonde boy from before and bit his lip. He couldn't help himself. He really could never look at other males because of his parents’ strict arranged marriage policy. But now Milo was free to do as he pleased. When the boy returned his gaze, he quickly looked away and back to the stage.

“Milo Thatch”

The whole room became quiet. They were probably thinking that here comes another Vulpes or Gerwulf due to his family. He smirked slightly to himself and murmured, “Owlorn, here I come. This was it.” He gripped his fists tightly, kept his eyes straight on his path, and walked up onto the stage. Milo paused slightly as he looked down at the crest then stepped onto it. He closed his eyes quickly as he felt everybody’s eyes on him then heard multiple gasps coming from the tables. He opened his eyes in time to see the owl soar down into him. He felt a fluttering in his stomach and a smile form on his face in realization.

“Owlorn!”

As he stepped off the stage and down to his table, everyone could see the victorious grin on his face. It had felt good defying his oh so perfect family.

Dream Job

His life was about perfect now. Milo thought as he looked around the library with a smile. Avalorn was his home for 7 years and now would be his permanent home until he retired from his dream job. He shook his shoulders and chuckled at this thought.  He probably would never retire, just like Mr. Stephens who was simply let go because of his age. The old man was sad at the loss of his job, but was relieved when Milo told him that he was asked for the job. Both of them were delighted to say the least. Mr. Stephens had always liked him ever since Milo had started his studies in the library and amazed the librarian with his knowledge.

He smiled softly as he remembered all of the memories that he had with Mr. Stephens, and then swallowed lightly at one special memory. He couldn’t believe that Mr. Stephens had accepted his orientation that quickly. Especially since Milo’s whole family had refused that this was true and bashed him for thinking that he was gay. He came from a prestigious half blood family that still stayed to arrange marriages.

Milo sighed softly and muttered a spell under his breath in irritation. Suddenly the books on the library cart floated up and began to place themselves on different bookshelves in different orders. He rubbed at his head in annoyance at the memory of his family looking down at him for being gay. They had even shunned him when he was sorted into Owlorn house! Since every Thatch family member had been sorted into the Vulpes house for generations…until him.  Oh well…he had gotten wisdom and intelligence rather than cunning and slyness as his characteristics.

As the memories flashed in his mind, he walked over to the grand window that was already open and breathed out heavily as the breezy air calmed him of his thoughts and memories. Besides he shunned them back too by refusing their letters and staying at the school for vacation. Unfortunately he had to go home the first 3 years for summer until he managed to convince Mr. Stephens to let him stay with him in the village. Meeting Milo’s parents were really the big reason why the librarian said yes, Milo thought as he leaned against the window. He stared out at the horizon and sighed softly with content.
Any day now, the boat would be sailing through that horizon toward Avalorn. He gripped his fists and swallowed lightly as one family member appeared in his mind.

“Taran…” he whispered as his eyes brightened then saddened in an instant. He wondered if his cousin would forgive him for leaving him with that awful family. Milo looked down at the water and ran his fingers through his hair. He had been a coward…he still was. As fortunate as he was to stay at Avalorn all year long, it was unfortunate too. He wanted to visit Taran so badly, but his family would have been a problem. So would Taran’s family too. One family would want to force him to go their way while the other family wanted him far away as possible.

Taran’s parents were both muggles and despised him for showing magic to their son due to their fear.  It was ridiculous, thought Milo. He then smiled softly at the memory of a small brunette boy who had the certain glint in his eye that every magical person had. People looked at Milo when he said that…he guessed that he was the only one who could see it. But either way, Taran’s magic had bloomed or as he would say ‘exploded’ out due to anger. It was a good thing that Milo had read that letter from his parents. It was odd to get a letter from them since he never got one since his 4th year.

Somehow his younger cousin, at the family reunion, had conjured up an earthquake that split the house in two. His parents had quickly tossed him to the Thatch family who were less than thrilled to have him until they had learned of that incident. He scoffed lightly and thought, they just wanted another family member to mold into perfection. His family also found out about the letter to Avalorn, so his younger cousin was finally coming here. He was excited, but was still nervous about how his cousin would react towards him after all that time. Well he wouldn’t know until soon.

Milo leaned off the window and took a step back as he looked at the scenery. He jumped slightly and quickly turned around when he heard a small thump behind him. He relaxed slightly when he saw some of the books on the floor. “Geez,” he groaned as he walked over to the books and picked them up. He rolled his eyes when he saw the titles.

“Of course, it’s always the restricted books that hate that spell.” He glanced over at the window one more time before heading over to the restricted area. He hoped this was going to be a great year as his first year as the librarian.

He smiled slightly and murmured, ‘Welcome to my domain, students”.
